Towards sustainable denim"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The jeans market and environmental damage: how to produce sustainable denim <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <strong>pair of jeans<\/strong>? That\u2019s <strong>11 thousand liters of water<\/strong>, thank you.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this is enough to understand that denim production is currently not sustainable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look inside your closet: how many jeans do you see? Now, consider that for each pair between 7 and 11 thousand liters of water were used, 11 thousand liters! More than it takes to produce a kilo of beef. An impressive amount, isn&#8217;t it? And this water could be used in better ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how can you do without jeans? You can\u2019t. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is why we are also looking for a <strong>solution to reduce pollution and waste caused by the processing of denim<\/strong>, thus making its production sustainable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Jeans or Denim? <\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First of all, a bit of clarity: <strong>what is the difference between jeans and denim?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the uninitiated, <strong>denim is the fabric<\/strong> composed mainly of diagonally woven cotton and therefore very robust. It often includes a variable percentage of polyester, nylon, lyocell or elastane. <strong>It was born around the fifteenth century<\/strong> in France and more precisely in the city of <strong>N\u00eemes<\/strong>, from which it takes its <strong>name: de-N\u00eemes, denim<\/strong>. It is used to make jackets, shirts, vests, shoes, bags&#8230; and our beloved jeans. <strong>Jeans are a style of trousers<\/strong>, an item of clothing that appeared in <strong>the second half of 1500 in Genoa<\/strong> and brought to global <strong>success<\/strong> <strong>by Levi Strauss in 1853<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that we have revealed this mystery, let\u2019s deal with the real problem: why is denim processing so harmful to the environment? <strong>Why does it take so many liters of water to produce a pair of jeans?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To answer these questions, we must ask ourselves another fundamental one: <strong>how is denim dyed?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2640 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/nazena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/QUESTA-SI-Indigo-recovery-from-denim.png\" alt=\"La colorazione dei jeans e i danni ambientali: verso un denim sostenibile - towards a sustainable denim\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nazena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/QUESTA-SI-Indigo-recovery-from-denim.png 960w, https:\/\/nazena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/QUESTA-SI-Indigo-recovery-from-denim-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/nazena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/QUESTA-SI-Indigo-recovery-from-denim-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/nazena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/QUESTA-SI-Indigo-recovery-from-denim-510x382.png 510w, https:\/\/nazena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/QUESTA-SI-Indigo-recovery-from-denim-480x360.png 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/h4>\n<h4><b>Indaco, leuco-indaco, indigofera: the colouring of jeans <\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, it is true that in 11,000 liters per pair of jeans the cultivation of cotton and the entire treatment of denim to create jeans are included, but <strong>what causes the greatest waste of water is precisely the famous blue colouring<\/strong>, which has accompanied them since the Genoese origins, from where the blue canvas started, expanded and took hold with the name of <strong>blue jeans, from \u201cblue de Genes\u201d, blue of Genoa<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>But are jeans born blue?<\/strong> Of course not. As we said they are made of denim, which comes from cotton, so basically white. An organic molecule is used to make them blue: <strong>indigo<\/strong>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s naturally present in <strong>plants <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>of the genus Indigofera<\/strong> and is intuitively blue, but as a pigment it is not soluble and therefore cannot be dissolved into water to proceed with the colouring of the fabric. So how can you do it? Indigo must be made soluble, and this can be done with chemicals that <strong>transform indigo into leuco-indigo<\/strong>, another molecule that is <strong>the soluble version of indigo<\/strong>. And guess what color is leuco-indigo? No, not blue, but <strong>yellow<\/strong>! And so this does not end here: once this yellow and soluble molecule has been obtained, it can be dissolved, and obviously a so-called <strong>solvent is needed<\/strong>: nothing threatening,<strong> just simple water<\/strong>. Denim is then immersed in an aqueous solution of leuco-indigo and subjected to <strong>several washes<\/strong> depending on how dark the fabric needs to be, turning yellow. <strong>Thanks to the oxidation in the air<\/strong>, the fabric finally takes on the blue colour as the air allows leuco-indigo to oxidize to indigo and adhere perfectly to the fiber. <strong>Finally you get the classic blue denim<\/strong> ready to become blue jeans.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2647 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/nazena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Foto-Water-Witness_Contamiancio\u0301n-agua-africa-1140x600-1-1024x539.jpeg\" alt=\"Inquinamento produzione denim: acqua contaminata scaricata nel sistema idrico - verso un denim sostenibile\" width=\"1024\" height=\"539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nazena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Foto-Water-Witness_Contamiancio\u0301n-agua-africa-1140x600-1-1024x539.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/nazena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Foto-Water-Witness_Contamiancio\u0301n-agua-africa-1140x600-1-300x158.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/nazena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Foto-Water-Witness_Contamiancio\u0301n-agua-africa-1140x600-1-768x404.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/nazena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Foto-Water-Witness_Contamiancio\u0301n-agua-africa-1140x600-1-1080x568.jpeg 1080w, https:\/\/nazena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Foto-Water-Witness_Contamiancio\u0301n-agua-africa-1140x600-1-980x516.jpeg 980w, https:\/\/nazena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Foto-Water-Witness_Contamiancio\u0301n-agua-africa-1140x600-1-480x253.jpeg 480w, https:\/\/nazena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Foto-Water-Witness_Contamiancio\u0301n-agua-africa-1140x600-1.jpeg 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/h4>\n<h4><b>Blue jeans: the environmental aspect <\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process has <strong>serious consequences for the planet<\/strong>: in addition to the <strong>cultivation of the cotton<\/strong> necessary to satisfy the jeans market, which requires <strong>enormous quantities of water i<\/strong>tself, thousands of liters are used to <strong>wash the denim<\/strong>, and the <strong>water contaminated by chemicals is discharged into the water system<\/strong>, polluting rivers, seas and aquifers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, fertilizers and pesticides are used for the intensive cultivation of cotton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to an estimate made by <em>Luiken et al.<\/em>, <strong>global jeans production exceeds 3,5 billion per year<\/strong>. If for each pair of jeans the water consumption is equal to 11,000 liters, it means that <strong>38,5 trillion liters of water are needed<\/strong> to satisfy the total production of this popular garment. This is equal to more than 60 thousand times the annual water consumption of all China!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we add that <strong>about 3% of global irrigation water is used for the cultivation of cotton<\/strong>, it is certainly not surprising that the <strong>textile industry <\/strong>is considered <strong>responsible for 20% of the total hydro waste<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, <strong>the water discharged after washing<\/strong> contains dissolved leuco-indigo (which oxidizes to indigo over time) but especially indigo in suspension (so not dissolved), which turns waste sludge blue, as well as traces of the chemicals used for the transformation of indigo into leuco-indigo. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This causes <strong>imbalance in various food chains of the aquatic ecosystem<\/strong>, <strong>as well as compromising the potability of water<\/strong> for us humans as well.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is what happens mainly <strong>in Asia<\/strong>, the world&#8217;s leading producer of denim <strong>with 70% of global production<\/strong>, but obviously has <strong>devastating consequences for the entire planet<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So why continue with this system?
